A native of Habersham County, Mr. Nichols was a son of the late William Collie Nichols and Altha Welborn Nichols. Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Whitlock Mortuary with the Revs. Bruce Moore and Ernest Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in Stephens Memorial Gardens. Survivors include his wife, Doris Whitlock Nichols; a son, Keith Nichols, Toccoa; two brothers, Joe Nichols, Eastanollee and Rev. Ernest Nichols, Toccoa; a sister, Pauline Stowe, Bethlehem; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Dwight Stowe, Allen Whitlock, Scott Bolemon, Jimmy Nichols, Louie Nichols, and Steve Cabe. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Crowe was a daughter of the late John and Para Lee Burch Dowell, and was a widow of William Guy Crowe. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Ann Lunsford. She was retired from the Hart County School System where she worked at Eagle Grove School as a dietician. She was a member of Milltown Baptist Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pruitt Funeral Home with the Revs. Ray Black and Johnny Stowe officiating. The body will be placed in the funeral home at noon. Burial will follow in Peniel P.H.C. Cemetery. Survivors include a son, Howard Crowe, Hartwell; three brothers; a sister; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A native and lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Chandler was a son of the late John Gibson and Bessie England Chandler. He was retired from the University of Georgia and was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He was a Crawford City Council member for 30 years, a member of the American Legion of Lexington and Crawford Methodist Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Crawford Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Hinzman officiating. Burial will be in Crawford Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Larrie H. Chandler; and two nieces, Helen Eldredge and Hazel Binford, both of Toccoa. Pallbearers will be Allen Huff, Jr., Mack Bowen, Ronnie Waller, Jack Eldredge, Mike Culbertson, and Cecil Ashworth. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:07 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2001 John Phillips Athens John Alan Phillips, 49, died Saturday, June 2, 2001. A native of Clarke County, Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Theatus A. and Maggie Carson Phillips. He was a mechanic and attended Fountain of Life Church. He served in the United States Air Force from November 14, 1971 until December 7, 1984. He served during the Vietnam War stationed in Thailand, flying in and out of Vietnam on missions to refuel fighter jets. He was the crew chief and during time received many awards for excellence. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Bishop Cemetery with the Rev. Nixon Strangway officiating. The entrance to the cemetery will be marked with white balloons. Survivors include a son, Trevor Alan Phillips, Athens; two sisters, Helen Phillips Gunter, Athens, and Rachael Phillips Teet, Roanoke, Ala.; a brother, T. Johnnie is a native of Athens, but spent many of his years working and traveling the United States. His free spirit gave him his strength and will continue to do so for those he leaves behind. Johnnie is preceded in death by his father, Don J. Johnson of Athens, Georgia and survived by his mother, Betty Ginn Headrick of Maryville, Tennessee; his older brother, Brad Johnson, and his children, Dakota and Lindsay; his sister, Kim Collins and her daughter, Madison; his brothers, Wesley Johnson and Rodney Johnson; and his little sister, Lisa Breedlove and her son, Quint. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Clay Huff officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
