Col. Kelly C. Turner, 76, of 122 Edwards St., died Friday, April 27, 2001. A native of Lula, Col. Turner was a son of the son of the late Paul Lee and Bernice Mize Turner. He was on active duty in the US Army for 23 years and served in the World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He established the ROTC program at Elbert County Comprehensive High School and served as senior army instructor for 19 years. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 11:01 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2001 Mary Bondurant Athens Mrs. Mary Claire Brannon Bondurant, aged 91 years, died April 26th, 2001, at her home in Athens. She was born December 5, 1909 in Pavo, Brooks County, Ga., the only child of the late Joseph Monroe Brannon DDS and Virginia Evelyn ''Jennie'' Brice Brannon. She married John Parnell Bondurant II on September 17, 1928 in Greer, S.C. and recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. She is survived by her husband, their three children: Mary Claire Bondurant Warren, Emmet Jopling Bondurant II, and John Parnell Bondurant III; eleven grandchildren, Eve Bondurant Warren Weeks, Mark Standard Warren, Amy Moss Warren Sanders, Stuart Heard Warren, Lisa Brannon Warren, David Studer, Emmet Jopling Bondurant III, Katherine Elizabeth Bondurant, Melissa Eileen Bondurant, Christopher Scott Bondurant, Miles Stephen Bondurant and Stanley James Bondurant; ten great-grandchildren, Sean Michael Weeks, Angeline Standard Warren Nicholson, Laura Elizabeth Warren Lucas, David Benjamin Warren, Robert Nathaniel Sanders, Amanda Claire Sanders, Mary Rachel Warren, Jenifer Leigh Warren, Andrew Parnell Bondurant and Tyler Nicholas Bondurant; and three great-great-grandchildren, Kaisea Lucas, Haelea Marie Lucas and Haley Nadine Weeks. Mrs. Bondurant graduated with honors from the University of Georgia, receiving an AB in Journalism in June 1931 and an MA degree with a major in Political Science, with post-graduate work in Personnel Administration at the University of Chicago and Columbia University. While a student at the University of Georgia, she helped organize and was the president of Parthenian Honor Society (later a chapter of Mortar Board); worked to secure a chapter of Theta Sigma Phi Honorary Journalism Sorority and served as it's first president, as well as being the president of her social sorority, Chi Omega. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi and received a Sigma Delta Chi Award and Key for excellence in the School of Journalism. Mrs. Bondurant became Director of the Personnel Office at the University of Georgia in July 1933 and served in this capacity until 1942 when she left the University to manage her husband's recently launched lumber and millwork business, the Athens Lumber Company, when he was called into service as an officer in World War II. Mrs. Bondurant helped to convert the Athens Lumber Company into a defense industry engaged in making ammunition boxes and Navy target materials. She was responsible for securing, financing and executing government contracts and the overall management of this company which employed from 40 to 50 people. At this time she had two children, ages five and twelve. Mrs. Bondurant was very active in worthwhile civic work in many fields. She was a member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Community Education Committee of the Athens-Clarke County Mental Health Association, serving as president in 1968-70, working diligently to improve the facilities and treatment available to the mentally ill and educate the public concerning this illness. She also was a member of the Board of the Northeast Georgia Mental Health Council as well as one of the organizers and charter members of the Athens General Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Bondurant was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church, the Athens Junior Assembly (now as the Junior League of Athens), and the Athens League of Women Voters. She served two terms as president of the Ladies' Garden Club of Athens (the first garden club in the U.S.) and was an organizer as well as chariman of the City Beautification Committee organized by Mayor Jack Wells, during which time dogwoods were planted along Prince Avenue and on other streets throughout the city. Mrs. Bondurant was named Woman of the Year in 1970 by the Athens Business and Professional Women's Club for her many civic activities and contributions to the City of Athens and Clarke County. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Grady Wigley and Dr. Bill Britt at Athens First United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 29 at 3:00 p.m. with burial to follow in Oconee Hill Cemetery.
