MARY E. BERNARD The Banner, Athens, Georgia, Friday morning, July 28, 1916 Transcribed by C. Epps Bond 10/2/2005 Bernard, Mary E. (Mrs. H. R. Bernard) MRS. H. R. BERNARD BURIED YESTERDAY ________ (From Tuesday’s Banner.) Yesterday morning at 11 o’clock, from the First Baptist church, of which she had long been a loyal and useful member, the funeral of Mrs. Mary E. Bernard, wife of Rev. Dr. H. R. Bernard, was conducted by Rev. J. W. Lynch, D. D. and Rev. John D. Mell, D. D. The services were specially appropriate and impressive – in tribute to the beautiful, long, helpful life ended Sunday morning at the home, 165 Waddell street. The burial was in Oconee cemetery, where may friends followed the casket to the quiet resting place of the dead and piled flowers of loving remembrance, emblems of immortality, upon the freshly-made mound. Mrs. Bernard was before her marriage Miss Mary Weatherly – member of one of the most prominent families of this city and section and besides her immediate family leaves a number of close relatives. Her husband survives her – but has been confined to his bed for several weeks in an Atlanta sanitarium with fever – being in a critical condition and unable to bear the news of the death of his wife. He has been prominent in Athens life – being in business here, then school commissioner for some years, and a Baptist preacher of power and much usefulness. He is now – and has been for years, assistant secretary of the Baptist mission board, having had most of the work of that office upon his shoulders for several years. Mrs. Bernad leaves three children: Miss Annie Bernard and Mr. Hugh Y. Bernard of this city and Dr. Guy T. Bernard, of Augusta. The pall-bearers were deacons of the First Baptist church: Messrs. M. M. Arnold, C. M. Snelling, W. H. Kytle, E. H. Dorsey, Geo. H. Hulme, and George Thornton. A mother in Israel she was, indeed – in every relation proving herself unselfish, devoted, kind, charitable, spiritual.
