JOHN BIRD The Banner, August 27, 1915 Transcribed by Connie Epps Bond, September 28, 2006. MR. JOHN BIRD DIED YESTERDAY WAS SEVENTY-SEVEN YEARS OF AGE AND HAD NOTABLE CAREER AS CONFEDERATE SOLDIER. (From Thursday’s Banner) Mr. John Bird, aged three score and ten and seven years, died yesterday afternoon at 5 o’clock at his home, corner of Prince avenue and Meigs street, after an illness of several days from pneumonia and a complication of other troubles. Mr. Bird was born in Morgan county but had lived most of his life in Clarke – in Athens. In the war between the states he was a member of company G, Fifth Georgia, and was the gallant color-bearer of that company, serving with distinction which was notable. He cherished the “Lost Cause” and until a year ago was a regular attendant upon all the reunions of the Confederate veterans – his wonderfully retentive mind recalling hundreds of incidents which his comrades and many of the younger generation never tired of hearing him recount. He is survived by his wife and five daughters and two sons: Misses Eula Bird, Lena Bird, Sarah Bird, Margaret Bird and Lucy Bird, of Athens; Mr. Clifford Bird, of Savannah, and Mr. Ovid Bird of this city. The funeral will be conducted from the First Baptist church this afternoon at 5 o’clock, the Rev. W. H. Young, former pastor of the church now at Thomason, GA, to conduct the services. The following are to be the pallbearers: Messrs. J. C. Hutchens, H. H. Linton, Louis Camak, T. P. Stanley, T. L. Mitchell and G. H. Hulme. The Confederate veterans of the city and section are to be the honorary pallbearers. The active and honorary pallbearers are asked to meet at Bernstein Brothers’ parlors at 4 o’clock this afternoon. The interment will be in Oconee cemetery.
