Quite a large number of the warm friends of the deceased were present to pay their last tribute of love and affection, and the services were beautiful and impressive. The casket, covered with beautiful flowers, was born to the channel by the pallbearers, Messrs G A Mell, H H Linton, C D Flanigen, E I Smith, H A Lowrance, C. W. Motes, R K Reaves and E D Sledge. The opening song was “Asleep in Jesus.” Sung beautifully by the choir, Messrs C I Mell, J C Mell, E B Mell and F J Orr. Then followed the song “Saved by grace.” Rev Ellison D Stone read the scripture lessons and offered prayer, after which the choir sang “Nearer, My God to Thee.” Mr. Stone in preaching this sermon took occasion to pay a high tribute to the lovely life of the deceased, recounting the fact that at the age of ten she joined the Methodist church, that until affliction denied her that pleasure, she was a devoted teacher in the Sunday school, taking great interest in the training (missing part of obit) tian resignation that told of her perfect readiness to enter upon her eternal rest. As the body was borne from the church the choir sang sweetly “How Firm a Foundation.” At the cemetery the services were concluded by Mr. stone and the remains of Miss Carlton were tenderly and lovingly laid to rest.
