Howell Cobb The country was startled on last Friday, the 9th inst. by the telegraphic announcement of the sudden death of this great man, whose name and memory are inseparably interwoven with the history of Georgia, who was stricken down by the resistless destroyer almost without warning, at the hotel at which he was staying, in New York, on the morning of that day. Any eulogy would be superfluous, even were our pen capable of indicting it, for not to know the honors which encircled his illustrious name, is ignorance inexcusable for a Georgian. The following summary of prominent points in his life, is taken from Lanman’s work: “Cobb, Howell- He was born at Cherry Hill in Jefferson County, Georgia, September 7, 1815. When a child, his father removed to Athens, Georgia, where he has since resided. He graduated at Franklin College in 1834; he studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1836; in 1837 he received the appointment Solicitor General of the Western Circuit, which he held four years and he was elected a ______ in congress in 1842, having been re-elected in 1844, 1846 and 1848 and during his latter term he was elected Speaker. On his retirement from Congress he was chosen Governor of Georgia. In 1858 he was again elected to Congress, and on the accession of Mr. Buchanan to the Presidency, Governor Cobb went into his Cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury. He took a prominent part in the rebellion of 1861, and was a member of the so-called Confederate Congress, and a Brigadier General. The death of such a man is, at any time, a public calamity; but at such a time as the present, to lose the counsels of so brilliant a mind is cause for mourning to every household in our oppressed South. May the Spirit of Him who has bereft our people in His inscrutable providence, comfort the hearts He has wounded, and sanctify the affliction to their good, while in mercy He shall turn away the evils which impend over our devoted land.
