A native of Clarke County, he was the son of Frances Hardeman Cofer of Athens and the late Ernest Dorsey Cofer. He was employed with the United States Postal Service for 39 years and was a member and chairman of the deacons of Attica Baptist Church. Mr. Cofer was an avid follower of the University of Georgia football program, having been a season ticket holder since 1974. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and son, according to loved ones. Survivors include his wife, Jerry Anne S. Rice Cofer; two daughters and sons- in-law, Missy Rice and Jimmy Towns, Homer, and Michele Rice and Jay Johnson, Statham; his mother; sister and brother-in-law, Sharon Cofer and Terrell Hayes, Winterville; two grandchildren, A.J. Rice and Garet Johnson; two nieces and spouses, Amy Hayes and Shane Moore, Athens, and Lori Hayes and Scott Cochran, Winterville; great-nieces, Hailey Moore, Sommer Moore, JennaLace Cochran; great-nephew, Cullen Cochran; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 3, at First Baptist Church of Winterville with the Rev. Shane Moore officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Scott Edwards, Dave Dowdy, Ty Fulcher, James Kinley, Wes Oldham and Dwight Dye. Honorary pallbearers were retired and active postal workers and Sid Harris, Charles Hawkins, Dean Upchurch and Tommy Johnson. Memorial contributions may be made to Atica Baptist Church Building Fund, 4352 Lebanon Church Road, Athens, Ga. 30607. Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, was in charge of arrangements.
