DRIVER Fulton County…, The Home Paper of South Fulton, Hapeville, GA, Thursday, November 2, 1939 Transcribed by Connie Epps Bond, October 25, 2006 DOD: Tuesday, Oct 31, 1939 General Driver Dies; Was Last Civil Vet. Here Hapeville’s last veteran of the War Between the States, General James L. Driver, who last month celebrated his 92nd birthday, succumbed Tuesday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. W. L. Hodnett, of 1740 Pelham road. Ill about two months, General Driver previously had been in excellent health and had taken an active interest in the affairs of the community. He was for many years commander of the Georgia division of the United States Confederate Veterans. In recent years he had divided his time between the home of Mrs. Hodnett and that of another daughter, Mrs. Thomas Lewis, of Hapeville. Enlisting as a private in the Confederate army in 1863 with Company A, of the Fifth Georgia Reserves, he saw much active service during the remainder of the war and was with General Joseph E. Johnston when he surrendered at Greensboro, N. C. He was a member of the Hapeville Methodist church. A son, Cliff Driver, of Cleveland, Ohio, also survives. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Methodist church, with Rev. H. T. Smith, Rev. Z. E. Barron and Rev. W. N. Twiggs officiating. Burial was in the Methodist churchyard at Zebulon. Pallbearers were Grier Martin, Jere A Wells, W. C. Asper, D. P. Pace, W. Frank Wells and J. R. Pruitt.
