Athens Couple Is Killed In Car Smashup Sunday
    An Athens couple, Mr. and Mrs. James Lester Dyess, of 378 Prince Avenue,
were instantly killed and 16-year-old Bob Bennett of Madison, is in General
Hospital in serious condition all the result of a head-on collision between two
cars two-tenths of a mile south of the city limits of Madison Sunday morning at
6:50 o’clock.
    Mrs. Dyess had been connected with St. Mary’s Hospital here since March of
1951, working in the emergency room on the first floor.  Mr. Dyess was connected
with a construction company and at the time of his death was working on a job at
Cumming, Ga.
   Mr. and Mrs. Dyess were riding in a 1950 model car with Mr. Dyess driving and
the couple was (sic) traveling south on Highway 441.  The Bennett youth, son of
Mr. and Mrs. N.R. Bennett, 304 Jasper Street, Madison, was driving north at the
time of the accident.
Charges Filed
    The State Patrol headquarters at Madison told the Banner-Herald this morning
that Bennett was apparently alone in his car and that the car was on the left
hand side of the highway when the crash happened.  The Patrol said the youth may
have been asleep or inattentive, and quoted witnesses as saying he was traveling
at a high rate of speed.
   The State Patrol filed charges of driving on the wrong side of the road
against Bennett.
   Both Mr. and Mrs. Dyess were taken to Hemperley Funeral Home in Madison. 
Funeral arrangements had not been completed, awaiting word from their son, J.B.
Dyess, who is in the U.S. Merchant Marine.  Bennett was brought to General
Hospital, his condition being reported serious this morning as the result of a
fractured leg and lacerations.
   Mrs. Dyess was a native of Apalachee, Ga., and is survived by her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Beal; six brothers, Prior, George and Grady Beal, all of
Apalachee; J.W. Beal, Madison RFD; Austin Beal, Macon; and Ernest Beal, of the
Cord Mill, near Athens; son J.B. Beal, U.S. Merchant Marine; and two sisters,
Mrs. Clyde Thrasher and Miss Alice Beal, both of Apalachee.
   Mr. Dyess is survived by his mother, Mrs. J.L. Davis, Milledgeville; brother,
Homer L. Dyess, Mobile, Ala.; and five sisters, Mrs. Dewey Long, Milledgeville;
Mrs. Delma Carter, Belle Glade, Fla.; Mrs. Jeff Hensley, Metter, Ga.; and Mrs.
E.S. Norton, and Mrs. Beatrice Jenkins, both of Savannah.
