J.H. FLEMING The Banner, Athens, Georgia, Friday morning, July 20, 1906 Transcribed by C. Epps Bond 10/3/2005 THE FUNERAL OF MR. J.H. FLEMING ---------- Remains Were Interred in Oconee Cemetery Yesterday Afternoon ---------- Yesterday afternoon at half-past five o’clock the funeral of Mr. Joseph H. Fleming was held at his residence on Milledge ave in the presence of a large number of friends. Mr. Fleming had been for many years a prominent merchant here and at the suggestion of President Michael of the Chamber of Commerce, the stores in the city were closed from five until seven o’clock yesterday afternoon in honor of his memory. At the home on Milledge avenue a large number of sorrowing friends gathered to pay tribute to their dead friend’s memory. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, attesting the high esteem in which he was held. Rev. Troy Beatty, rector of Emmanuel church, opened the services with prayer, after whIch the choir, consisting of Miss Isabel Hillsman, Miss Katie Jeser, Prof. C.M Strahan and Prof. W. D. Hooper, sang sweetly the hymn, “Lead, King”, Light.” Mr. Beatty then read the Scripture lessons and offered prayer, fter which the choir sang “Nearer, My God, to Thee.” The casket was then borne to the hearse by the pallbearers, Messrs. C. H. Phinizy, L. F. Edwards, H. C. White, R. W. Lamkin, A. P. Dearing, Billups Phinizy, J. I. Wilkins and A. E. Griffith. The other members of the board of directors of the Southern Mutual Insurance Company acted as honorary pallbearers At the grave in Oconee cemetery the services were concluded according to the rites of the Episcopal church.
