Hold Rites for
S. R. Maxwell 

Samuel Riley Maxwell, well known resident of 223 Mantahala Avenue, died at his 
home Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock.  Mr. Maxwell was  (* 85 ?) years old and 
had been ill for several weeks. 

Services were conducted this afternoon at 4:30 o’clock from East Athens 
Baptist Church with the pastor (* Rev.?   ?   Burdley ?), Rev. G. M. Spivey, 
Atlanta, and Rev. Melvin Wise, pastor of Talmadge Heights Baptist Church, and 
Rev. C. R. Ellison, pastor of Central Baptist Church, officiating. 

Interment followed in Oconee Hill Cemetery, Bernstein Funeral Home in charge 
of arrangements.  Pall-bearers were Woodrow Harris, William Henry Harris, 
Richard Haris, Donald Maxwell, Leon Maxwell and Eldridge Cements. 

Mr. Maxwell is survived by four daughters, Mrs. G. F. Harris, Birmingham, Ala. 
And Mrs. Lewis Seabolt, Mrs. Emma Brooks and Mrs. Thelma Maxey, all of Athens, 
five sons, E. M. Maxwell, and O. W. Maxwell, both of North Charleston, S.C. 
and G. C. Maxwell, H. R. Maxwell and H. D. Maxwell, all of Athens, nineteen 
grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. 

A native of Jackson County, Mr. Maxwell had lived in Athens for the past 
twenty-two years being a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.
