Bond Dec 25, 2005 - - - - - - - - - - - Bert Michael - - - - - - - - - - Bert Michael, son of Mr. And Mrs. Simon Michael, of this city, died Saturday in Atlanta in a sanitarium, where he had been carried, after an operation in this city for appendicitis. He was buried in Athens Monday, an immense concourse of people in all walks of life, attending the funeral, which was from the residence on Prince Avenue. This young man was a favorite in Athens. He had just graduated from the University, and was the youngest member of the class, and was appointed to the position of captain of a company, he was taking his stand at the head when this sad calamity overtook him. He was a manly son of a noble father and mother, and the only one of a large family to cross the great divided. No wonder what it wrings their hearts as nothing else could, but there is another side – this great divided is only the turning point, just like a certain mountain top turns the water, part into the Pacific and part into the Gulf. It will only be a short time at the very longest, when one by one as they, too come to the great divide, when like the waters of the Pacific and the Gulf will mingle together again until those shall be a great re-union. We deeply sympathize with them in their great grief, made more so by the fact that they were thousands of mils away while their boy was slowly but surely dying, but rejoice with them that they reached home in time to see his face before he died. They laid him away by the rippling waters of the Oconee amidst the lovliest flowers from friends all over the state.
