She was born in Commerce on September 14, 1910, the only child of Charles and Leila Ritchie Mize. Dr. Mize graduated from Commerce High School in 1926 and attended the GA State Teachers' College, Athens, for 2 years. Following this, she studied at the University of Georgia, receiving the following degrees: Bachelor of Science (Physics) 1930; Master of Science (Mathematics) 1931; and Bachelor of Science of Home Economics in 1932. She held a graduate teaching assistantship in the Physics Department with UGA during 1930-1931. Later graduate study was at Columbia University, New York, NY; Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa; and Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. From the latter institution she received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in June 1952. Dr. Mize was a lifelong educator. From 1932-1934, she taught in rural Berrien County, and from 1934, she served in various county and district positions with the Faarmers'Home Administration in Georgia. She was executive secretary, GA Nutrition Committee, during part of World War II, under the War Food Administration. From 1945 to 1949, she held various county and special assignments with the GA Agricultural Extension Service, Home Demonstration work. From 1952 until her retirement from UGA in May of 1974, she was the Head of Housing and Home Management Department in the College of Home Economics. Dr. Mize was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Lambda Theta. She was also a 50 plus year member of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as Regent and Honorary Regent in the Elijah Clarke chapter and held many leadership positions on the state and national levels. Dr. Mize served as president of the Daughters of Colonial Wars in Georgia. She was an active member of the GA and American Family and Consumer Services Association and the UGA Alumni Association, as well as the Alumni Associaation of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Dr. Mize was a genealogist who authored family histories, as well as "History of Banks County 1858-1976", "The History of the Home Economics Department at the University of Georgia" and "The History of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens, GA" Dr. Mize held a lifelong membership at the Commerce Presbyterian Church of Athens since 1925. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home with Dr. Tom Lewis officiating. Burial followed at 12:30 pm at Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce. Dr. Mize is survived by cousins and many friends.
