MORTON The Banner, Friday morning, September 6, 1918, Athens, Georgia Transcribed by C. Epps Bond 10/2/2005 Morton, William J. (Col) FUNERAL OF COL. WM. J. MORTON Sunday afternoon at half past twelve o’clock at the home on Hull street occurred the funeral of the late Co. William J. Morton. Quite a large number of sorrowing friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect and the many and lovely floral offerings testified in their sweet way the esteem and love in which the deceased was held. At the request of Col. Morton the Presbyterian burial services was used, the service being conducted by Rev. E. L.Hill, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Causten Harrell, pastor of the Methodist church of Durham, N. C., who offered the closing prayer. The choir consisted of Mrs. J. F. Campbell, Mrs. Hugh Gordon, Miss Margaret Campbell and Miss Edith Hodgson, Prof. W. D. Hooper, Prof. C.M. Strahan and Prof. R. S. Pond. The remains were born to the hearse by the pallbearers, Messrs. W. F. Dorsey, H. J. Rowe, James Barrow, A. R. Nicholson, R. K. Reaves, R. A. Washburn, F. A. Lipscomb, Billups Phinizy, W. T. Forbes, and G. F. Stephenson. The interment was in Oconee cemetery.
