Powell, 71, of Rte. 1. Spring Valley Rd., died Wednesday in an Athens hospital following an extended illness. Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Bridges Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Ward and the Rev. R.B. Moody Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Winterville Cemetery. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Ruby Akiens (sic) Powell; four daughters, Mrs. Howard Stewart of Kannapolis, N.C., Mrs. J.C. Barnett of Winder, Mrs. John Rogers of Asheville, N.C. and Mrs. James L. Yarbrough of Athens; two sons, Gerald Powell and Herschel Powell, both of Winterville; two sisters, Mrs. W.O. Evans of Winder and Mrs. Ideal Bolton of Statham; three brothers, Hoard Powell and Roger Powell, both of Watkinsville and Dupree Powell of Bogart; 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are James Strickland, Doc Robinson, James Moore, Talmadge Powell, Grady L. Powell and Ronald Grindle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7-9 p.m. and will be at the residence.
