C. RUSSELL Dies Here Today RUSSELL RITES TO BE HELD FRIDAY 3 P.M. Judge Lewis C. Russell, member of one of the Georgia’s best known families, died in a local hospital Wednesday morning at 2:20 o’clock. Judge Russell was 78 years old and had been ill for the past six weeks. Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock from First Presbyterian Church by Dr. E. L. Hill, pastor emeritus of the church, Dr. Harmon (B ? bluried) Ramsey, present pastor, and Dr. Henry L. Russell, pastor of the Presbyterian church in Montgomery, Ala. Burial will follow in Oconee Hill cemetery, Bridges Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pall-bearers will be nephews of Judge Russell. He is survived by two brothers William John Russell, Athens, and Edward Gaston Russell, Waynesboro, Va; nephews, Senator Richard B. Russell, Judge Robert L. Russell, William Russell and Dr. Alex Russell, all of Winder, Major Water B. Russell, U. S. Army, Dean Fielding Russell, Statesboro, William Russell, Jr., Athens; and Brevard Russell, Waynesboro, VA and several great-nieces and nephews. Born at Princeton Judge Russell was the son of William John and Harriet Brumby Russell and was born in 1871 at the old Russell home at Princeton, where the Russell family lived for twenty-two years. He attended Miss Jule Moss’ school and the University of Georgia, graduating with the class of 1891. In 1941 he attended the fiftieth reunion of his class here. Judge Russell studied law with his brother, the late Chief Justice Richard Russell of the Georgia Supreme Court, and practice law for several years in Winder. During his residence in Winder he was largely instrumental in the establishment of the Presbyterian Church there and in the erection of the church building. He served for two terms as Mayor of Winder and was the first judge of the Piedmont Judicial Circuit. Judge Russell served as campaign manager in the successful race his brother made for Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court and also in the successful campaign of his nephew, Richard B. Russell, for Governor and the United States Senate. For more than five years he served with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation on loans and for about five years as Trial Examiner for the Federal trade Commission, holding hearings in New York, Boston, Chicago and many other large cities. Because of accidents for which he was not responsible, for the past several years he has suffered much pain. Judge Russell had many friends in Athens from his boyhood days at Princeton and on many subsequent visits here with his brother, William J. Russell. He was brought to a local hospital from Washington, D. C., on January 24, this year because of the condition of his health and had remained in the hospital until his death early today.
