Funeral This Afternoon. Yesterday morning at six o'clock at her home on Prince avenue in this city, Mrs. Carrie N. Shackelford, wife of Mr. Charles W. Shackelford, and mother of Messrs. Thomas J. and Franck (sic) C. Shackelford and Mrs. C. A. Ver Nooy, of this city, died, after an illness of one hour. Mrs. Shackelford was apparently in the best of health the night before, sitting up until a late hour talking with the members of her family. Yesterday morning about five o'clock or possibly a little later, she awoke her husband and told him that she was choking to death. She had been for several years at times a sufferer from bronchitis, and this disease seemed to have returned upon her. Mr. Shackelford hastily summoned his two sons and it was seen that the faithful wife and mother was in a desperate condition. A physician was secured as soon as possible, but death came just before he arrived. Mrs. Shackelford was seventy-three years of age, having been born in Jackson county, and having lived her entire life in that county and in the city of Athens. She is survived by her husband and seven children, Mrs. W. C. Potts, of Atlanta; Mr. R. C. Daniel, of Jackson county, children by a former marriage; Mr. Henry Shackelford, of Attica; Mr. Thomas J. Shackelford and Mr. Frank C. Shackelford of Athens; Mr. George Shackelford of Abbeville, Ga., and Mrs. Charles A. Ver Nooy, of Athens. Mrs. Shackelford was greatly beloved by all who knew her, possessing as she did the golden virtues of the Christian wife, mother and friend. From early girlhood hers was a rounded character, strong in the faith of religion, gentle in the love of the Christian, beautiful in all the virtues that adorn the noblest womanhood. Of a retiring disposition, she was best loved by those who knew her best. Her friendship was unfailing, her hand was ever open to relieve the needy, the cry of the distressed found response in her gentle heart, and a l (sic) along the pathway of life by word and deed she scattered roses, the fragrance of which will linger long after the sweet flowers of each perennial spring shall blossom upon her grave. Around the fireside she was the inspiration of those who came within the charm of the home circle. In the happy hours of youth and when the almond tree flourished and the shadows lengthened around her pathway, she was the joy of her husband, to whom in this hour of separation the sympathies of hosts of friends is extended. A loving mother, devoting the sweetest and best efforts and the most tender affection of a long and useful life to the welfare and happiness of her children, she left an impress that cannot fade, and in this hour her children "rise and called her blessed." A consistent member of the Presbyterian church, she followed the footprints of the Master through sunshine and through shadow until they led her through the gates of pearl into the glories of the morning land. The funeral of Mrs. Shackelford will be held this afternoon at three o'clock at the residence on Prince avenue, and the interment will be in Oconee cemetery. The services will be conducted by Rev. E. L. Hill, pastor of the Athens Presbyterian church. The following gentlemen will act as pallbearers and will meet at half-past two o'clock at the undertaking parlors of Dorsey & Funkenstein; Messrs. J. N. Webb, Charles H. Brand, J. W. Barnett, C. H. Newton, T. W. Reed, W. T. Bryan, J. H. Griffith, and Howell C. Erwin.
