THE FUNERAL OF 
     MRS. THORNTON 


Held at the Residence on 
Broad St., Tuesday Morning
At Ten O’clock 

The funeral of Mrs. Tom Thornton was held Tuesday morning at the residence on 
Broad street and at the appointed hour quite a number of friends and relatives 
gathered there to pay the last tribute of respect and affection to the memory 
of the deceased. 

The casket was covered with lovely flowers, beautiful tokens of the love and 
esteem in which Mrs. Thornton was held by her many friends. 

The choir, consisting of Misses Jester and Murrell and Messrs. Murrell, 
Gardner and Huggins, sang sweetly the opening hymn.  “Asleep in Jesus” after 
which Dr. W. H. Young, pastor of the First Baptist church, read the scripture 
lessons and offered a beautiful prayer. 

The choir then sang “Nearer, My God to Thee” and Rev. Ellison D. Stone 
preached the funeral sermon, which was full of consolation to the bereaved 
loved ones.  The choir sang as a closing hymn “God be With You Til We Meet 
Again.” 

The casket was borne to the hearse by the pall-bearers, Messrs. W. A. Harris, 
J. R. Williams, J. M. McCurdy, R. E. Bradberry, G. A. Broach and T. W. Reed, 
and at the grave in Oconee cemetery the last sad rites were performed by Dr. 
Young and Mr. Stone, and the remains tenderly and lovingly laid to rest.
