The Bluffton Land Company was organized in 1869 and purchased land from Mrs. L.R. Clam's estate. This land was divided into 47 plots ranging in size from 2.9 acres to 90 acres. The company reserved land to be used by the village for the public good, such as for school and churches. This progressive move was made just fifteen years after Clay County became officially a county unit apart from the long years as the Fifth District of Early County. Bluffton had years of slow growth but churches and a school were organized. The Bluffton High School known as “Pin Plains School’* was one of the best high schools in this area in the late 1800’s. Within the city limits of Bluffton there is a broad ravine which has ever flowing springs. Over the years this was developed as a pleasure resort. Eventually a large pavilion was erected down at the low level of “The Bluff”, and for many years this served as the scene of picnics and dances and other forms of amusement. The healthful clear flowing waters of the spring furnished water for the swimming pool. Located in a fertile farming area, general prosperity made it a busy and pleasant community, but the coming of the boll weevil altered the farming system radically. Many people were forced by circumstance to seek other areas, and the decline of Bluffton followed. Today Bluffton is a quiet, very pleasant little group of homeowners. It has a very large peanut mill, two churches, and an interesting community house adapted from the school house of a hundred years ago. At the Bluff, one can see the old pavilion which was the scene of so many Fourth of July celebrations in the past.
