Department of the Interior, Pension Office. 19 October 1872 Sir, You are respectfully requested to furnish official evidence of the enrollment, muster, service, and duty of Thomas Green, who enlisted at Bath, Richmond Co., Geo. On the __ day of __ 1812, in Lieut. Turpins Company __ Regiment U. States Cavalry, and who was discharged at Point Peter Geo. on the ___ day of ___ 1817…….. Also served with Capt. W [M?] N. Payne, U. S. Cavalry or Infantry. Also with Captain Proctor….. Claim No. 28.105 J. H. Baker Commissioner. 2) Augusta Ga 1883, March 15th Wm L Dudley Pension Commissioner, Washington D. C. Dear Sir, I have heard that there has been an increase in the amount of Pension paid to all wounded soldiers of the US Army. My certifficate [sic] is No. 22928. by letting me know you will greatly oblige. Yours &c Thos. Green per c. Post Box #674 Augusta, Ga. 3) Special Examination Division. Postmaster at Fort Gaines Ga Sir: You are requested to inform me at your very earliest convenience whether the pensioner Thomas Green War 1812 is living or dead; and, if dead, the Exact Date of Death. His last known address was at your place in June 84 [1884] 4) Survivor War 1812, Cert. #22928, Thomas Green. Thomas Green pensioned for the war of 1812 died at his home in this county [apparently Clay according to the above letter] the 7th day of June 1884. S V Lewis? P.M. [postmaster] 5) …To All Whome it May concern, Know ye That Thomas Green a Private Soldier of Capt. M. M. Payne’s Compy (N?) [or V?] Corps of United States Artillery, Who was enlisted the Twenty ninth day of Sept 1812 to serve five years is hereby Honorably discharged from the army of the United States by reason of having served out the full period for which he enlisted. Said Thomas Green was born in Georgia is Twenty three years of age, Five feet seven inches high, Dark complexion, Dark hair, Dark Eyes and by reputation when enlisted a Farmer. Given at Point Peter Camp State of Georgia this 29th Day of Sept 1817… [signed] M M Payne, Capt Artly? Comdg? 6) Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C. October 23, 1872 Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension No. 28105 War of 1812 and to return it herewith, with such information as furnished by the files of this office. It appears from the records that Thomas Green was enlisted on the Twenty-ninth day of September 1812, at Bath to serve Five years, and was assigned to the U. S. Dragoons. He is reported enlisted by Lieut. Turpin and served in Lieuts. B. Turpins and Jno. Ervings Companies under command of Major J. Burbank. Monthly return dated Charleston Harbor, Sept. 1817 reports him discharged from U S Artillery Corps by reason of expiration of service. The U. S. Dragoons was made Artillery after May 17, 1815. J. P.[?] Martin, Assistant Adjutant General. 7) Power of Attorney Know all men by these presents, That I, Thomas Green of Fort Gaines, in the County of Clay and State of Georgia, …appoint Chas. C. Tucker, of Washington D.C. my true and lawful attorney for me and in my name place and stead to prosecute my claim for Pension No. 28.105 Under Act February 14, 1871…. My former attorneys have abandoned the claim…27th day of September, 18 [signed] Thos Green In presence of John B. Johnson, John C. Wells….. 27th Sept 1873, J. L. Tucker, Clerk Supr Court Clay County 8-9) In the case of Thomas Green, No. 28105 petition of file sometime in 1872, petitioner has been put off from time to time by ____? and _____? pretexts. His attys C____? & McLendon abandon? the case to you. He is a survivor of the War of 1812, and desires to be put on the pension rolls. His papers are on file at Washington. The last objection is that these needs a seal. There was a seal [underlined] impressed? on the papers if not in wax. A sober man could see it. Examine for the officials. Know it to ____? one dollar ___? ____? for it, and tell them to put the old man on the roll. He will pay for the service. Sept 15th 1873… [signed] Culbert? ___? McLinden? [Almost impossible to read the handwriting of this letter] 10) War of 1812. State of Georgia, County of Clay On the 26th day of April, A. D. one thousand eight hundred and Seventy eight personally appeared before me, J. S. Tucker, Clerk of the Superior , the same being a Court of Record within and for the county and state aforesaid, Thomas Green, aged 83 years, a resident of Fort Gaines, in the County of Clay, in the State of Georgia, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Thomas Green who served under the name of Thomas Green as a private in the cavalry? company commanded by Capt. Proctor afterwards in an Artillery company commanded by Captain M. N. M. Payne, in the regiment of not numbered, commanded by (company was not attached to regiment), in the war of 1812; that he enlisted by Lieut Beverly? Turpins at Richmond, Bath, Ga, near Augusta in latter part of the year 1812, for the term of 5 years, and continued actual service in said war for the term of five years and was honorably discharged at Point Peter Georgia, in the fall of the year 1817. That since his discharge from said service he as resided as follows, viz: lived the year 1818 in Savannah, Ga.—in 1819 in Clark Co, Ga—1820 in Green Co Ga, from 1821 to 1833 in Morgan Co., Ga and from there removed to Randolph Co, Ga, my present residence but the county was divided by an act of the legislature which placed me in Clay Co. The following was his description at the time of enlistment, viz: Age 18 yrs, 5 ft 6 inches high—blue eyes, light hair, muddy complexion born in Green Co. Ga and by occupation a farmer. … He also declares that he has heretofore made no application for bounty when discharged at Point Peter. I went to Charleston SC when I drew from Leiut Sneed pay master my back pay and a bounty of land. I afterwards lost my pocket? book containing land warrant and my discharge, and that his residence town of Fort Gaines county of Clay, state of Georgia and his post-office address is Fort Gaines, Clay County Georgia. Peterson, Seaborn Jones [original signatures] 11) War of 1812, Act of February 14, 1871, Brief of Claim for a Survivor’s Pension In case of Thomas Green, of Lieut B Turpin’s Company U. S. A. Militia. Residence: Clay Co., Georgia Post Office address: Fort Gaines, Clay Co., Ga. Served from September 29, 1812, discharged to the end of the war, 1815. Declaration and identification in due form filed September 23rd, 1872. Service for Sixty days shown as follows: Rejected [underlined] by reason of failure to file proper declaration, and presumptive abandonment of claim. Adjt General reports that Thomas Green served in Lieut Turpins and John Ervings [or Ewings?] companies from September 29, 1812 to Sept 1815. On Nov 12, 1872, declaration sent to Atty for a seal of the court. April 21st 1873 Atty written to for return of the Declaration. A new declaration called for Oct 22d 1873. Call repeated Mch 26, 1876 without reply… Rejected Mar 10th, 1875……. 12) Service Pension War of 1812. Survivor’s brief. Rejected case reopened. No. 28.105 Act of Mar 9, 78, Cert. No. 22928. Admitted June 20, 1878 to a pension of eight dollars per month from March 9, 1878, the date of act…. Bounty Land Claim: No evidence of W having been issued Approved June 29, 1878 13) No. 22.928 Act 1878 War of 1812. Survivor’s Pension. Georgia, Thomas Green, Rank Private, Company Lieut B. Turpins and John E____g?, Regiment U S Dragoons and Artillery, New Orleans Agency, Rate per month Eight dollars, commencing March 9, 1878, Certificate dated July 10, 1878 and sent to Pension Agent July 1878. 15126-160-12 14) There seems to have been some confusion in the granting of land to Thomas Green, S. C. 22928, this man, and the rejection of bounty land of Thomas A. Green, Reg 123966-50, who states he received a warrant & sent it to be patented but never received his patent. They are filed separately & it seems as if they were not identical…. Jan 15, 1937.
