He had collapsed earlier while conducting Handel’s Messiah on the stage of the school’s auditorium. The 63-year-old musician, composer and singer had taught voice and conducted at the school for about two years, PBAC President Claude Rhea said. Rhea described Mr. Brown, who lived in Palm Beach, as “a consummate musician, a great, great spirit.” “The campus is devastated. He was well-loved by everybody,” said Lynn Van Lenten, the school’s director of public relations. Mr. Brown was born on a Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma to a Cherokee mother and a French father, Van Lenten said. He grew up in Fort Gaines, Ga. He began studying piano at age 4, and by age 12, had won several national awards. Mr. Brown received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Bob Jones University in South Carolina before studying at Julliard School of Music and Columbia University, both in New York, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. He became the associate musical director of the St. Louis Opera in 1951 and later worked with the Teatro del Opera in Rome and theaters in California and Florida, including the Royal Poinciana Playhouse. Mr. Brown served as musical director and conductor for the final national tour of The King and I, with Yul Brynner. Mr. Brown is survived by two sons in Georgia. Arrangements were being made for a memorial service at the school and a funeral, Van Lenten said. “The kids are really taking it hard,” she said. “They need to let the dust settle before they decide what to do for him.” Additional Comments: ADOPTED SON OF MARY LIGHTFOOT BROWN AND LEWIS PAULLIN BROWN File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/clay/obits/b/brown10097gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
