The cause of "Uncle" Charley's sudden death is supposed to be from heart failure, although he had not been in good health for some time. "Uncle" Charley was a carpenter by trade, and he had lots of friends among both white and black. He was a member of several secret order societies in Fort Gaines, and was buried by the colored Knights of Pythias, the interrment taking place Sunday afternoon at the old cemetery near the pumping station. The funeral was attended by a large crowd of people including a number of white people."
