[abstracted due to length of obituary] On last Tue morning ...during early hours of the day...good man and prominent citizen passed away... resided with Mr Aaron Wallenstein & his wife who were the son-in-law & devoted elder daughter of Mr. Kauffman....Mr Kauffman was one of the best citizens that ever lived in the town...quiet, unassuming, kindly disposed, attentive to the needs & wants of others, obliging in trade, and serupulously honest in all his dealings...Mr Kauffman was born in Bavaria, Germany nearly 74 yrs ago...came to this country in 1856 & settled at Geneva, GA where he resided & conducted business until 1861...faithful & patriotic soldier in the Confederate army...at close of the war removed to Florence, GA in 1870 & successfully conducted a mercantile business until 1879 when he returned to Columbus & engaged in business with his brother under the firm name of C & J J[?] Kauffman. From Columbus he came to Ft Gaines in 1897... remains escorted to Columbus last Wed by members of the immediate family & there interred...leaves of his immediate family here only two daughters, Mrs. Aaron Wallenstein and Miss Carrie Kauffman, besides others of his more remote kindred at this place, Eufaula, Ala, and Columbus, GA...Just 2 years ago Mr. Kauffman was called upon to undergo the sad stroke of the death of his beloved wife....his parents lived to the ages of 93 & 99 years.....
