Gaines died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at his residence. Mr. Killebrew was born in Shorterville, Ala., to the late Edgar Turner Killebrew Sr. and Annie Long Wood Killebrew, but moved to Abbeville, Ala., with his family as a child. He was a 1940 graduate of Abbeville High School and attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, (Auburn University), where he majored in agricultural education and also participated in the Army R.O.T.C. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of 1st lieutenant. In 1948, he moved to Clay County where he was engaged in various aspects of farming all his adult lifetime. He was an active member of the Ft. Gaines United Methodist Church and formerly served as Sunday School superintendent and as a member of the board of stewards. He was a member of the board of directors of the Pataula Electric Membership Cooperative and served on the board of directors of the Clay County Farm Bureau, the ASCS Committee of Clay County and as a member of the Clay County Board of Education. He was also a life member of the Ft. Gaines Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Lonie Wood "Mishie" Killebrew; a daughter, Besse Killebrew Mills and husband, Bill of Ft. Gaines; two grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Mills of Atlanta and Edward Lanier "Ward" Mills of Athens; a sister, Edith Killebrew Latimer of Evans; and a brother, Edgar T. Killebrew Jr. and wife, Gussye Arnold of Abbeville. Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Ft. Gaines United Methodist Church with Bishop Paul A. Duffey and Rev. Garth Duke-Barton officiating. Interment followed at New Park Cemetery in Ft. Gaines. Pallbearers were Jon Latimer, Kent Killebrew, Stan Killebrew, Drew Latimer, Benjamin Latimer, Kenton Killebrew, Kyle Killebrew and John S. Riley.
