Many of our readers will remember Charles R. Burke, who was a resident of 
Lumpkin for a number of years before and after the war.  Ten or fifteen years 
ago he removed to Ft. Gaines and has been the bridgekeeper there for several 
years.  He also had a little store at the foot of the bridge on the Alabama 
side of the river.  One night last week about 10 o’clock he was waiting on a 
negro in his store who wanted to buy a pistol.  Mr. Burke was showing the negro 
a 38 caliber pistol, and he asked Mr. Burke to load it for him so he could 
learn how it was done.  The loaded pistol was handed to the negro to look at 
and as Mr. Burke turned his head to look after something else the negro shot 
him in the head. – Lumpkin Independent
