Students and teachers at Fort Gaines Academy pose on the steps of the school for a photograph. This school, built in 1831, was located on Commerce Street. Clay County was served by private schools such as this one until the first public school building was constructed in 1903. Around 1940 this structure was no longer used as a school but had become a residence. See page 79 of The History of Clay County for identification of the people in the photograph.
