Yancy maby10@juno.com Discovered September 2006 FRANCES (larger) Wife of HAMPTON HALES Died - June 4,1888 Aged 48 yrs. The inscriptions on the graves are as follows: (For Frances Hales) An upright, arched grave stone on a block. There is a carved hand with what looks like the folded portion of a shirt (fingers and thumb facing forward, with one finger pointing upward) supporting an ornate design of carved flowers as if in an urn. There are also carvings of what appears to be smaller flowers around the arch of the headstone that stands about 2-1/2 feet high. Below the hand, are these words. The name FRANCES is an inset in large letters. Wife of is engraved below in capital and lower case, and then the husband's name is in engraved inset letters, but not as large as FRANCES, and the words Died - June 4, 1888. At one time, it must have been really beautiful. There is an indented section just behind the headstone where flowers could have been placed. Also, on the concrete slab over the grave, there is an indented section at one end where perhaps flowers could have been placed. What I believe to be an infant's grave is about 15 feet from this grave with an upright concrete grave marker stone embedded on a mound of dirt and debris. I discovered this grave last Saturday (almost right under my nose). I think that I had missed it because of the mound, weeds and the debris. This small Headstone simply reads F. H. In my search, I have not found this grave listed in any record. The woman, Frances Hales died June 4, 1888. On the rather small, but elaborate headstone it shows her age as 48 ("Aged 48"). She and her husband, Hampton Hales appeared in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census with a variant spelling of their names: Page 149, Line 5 - Dwelling Number 85; Family Number 91 (Clayton County Beat 538) Sup. Dist. 4., Enum. Dist. 36. Enumerator: John G. Starr Hail, Hampton B M 55 Head Blacksmith Could not RorW Place of birth = SC Father's POB = SC Mother's POB = MD Francis B F 45 Wife H.K. Could not RorW Place of birth = VA Father's POB = VA Mother's POB = VA On the small, grey, upright tombstone that I discovered on Sat., Sept. 23, only the initials F.H. appear which, of course, are the same as Frances Hales. The Individual Record from the Family History Library Film (LSD) shows that Hampton Hail was born <1825>, and that his wife, Francis Hail was born <1835>. (Variant spellings again.) My final speculation is that a year after the death of Frances Hales (shown as Francis Hail) in the 1880 U.S. Census, that a Hampton Hale married an Anna Williams on July 07, 1889 in Henry County. I am wondering if that is the Blacksmith from Clayton.
