SMITH VETERAN, PASSES Fulton County, The Home Paper of South Fulton, Hapeville, GA, Thursday, October 12, 1939 JOSEPH E. SMITH, Veteran, Passes Hapeville’s number of Confederate veterans was reduced to one with the passing of Joseph Edwin Smith, former guard during the War Between the States at Andersonville Prison, Wednesday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. G. Looney, 3609 Atlanta avenue. He was 93 years old. A native of clayton county, where he was born July 6, 1864, he enlisted as a private with the Fifth Georgia Regiment in 1863, and saw active service throughout the war. He was promoted to a sergeant in 1864, and it was while serving under the command of General Arnold that he was stationed as guard at historic Andersonville Prison. Until 13 years ago, when he moved to the home of his daughter, he had lived near Jonesboro, and for 60 years occupied the old Smith home which is a landmark of the community. Besides Mrs. Looney, he is survived by four other daughters, Mrs. Mamie Levern, of Decatur, Mrs. H. A. Orr, of Forest Park, Mrs. S. H. Cobb, of Atlanta, and Mrs. H. E. Stanfield, of East Point; two sons, E. M. Smith of Marietta, and S. H. Smith of College Park; 27 grandchildren and 7 great- grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at the Methodist church. Rev. h. T. Smith, Rev. Z. E. Barron and Rev. W. J. Debardeleben officiated. Brandon-Camp Funeral Home was in charge.
