Samuel Crews is born in Clinch County, Georgia, likely in the 12th District, on November of 1870. He is the son of Samuel Crews and Morgianna "Annie" Waldron. Sam married Sarah E. "Sallie" Carter, daughter of Allen Carter and Sarah E. Corbett. The couple had two children, they are: 1. Leo b. 2 Oct. 1902, Lake Park, GA m. Morgiana (Annie) was approximately 5 months pregnant with Samuel. His father, also Samuel, passed away when the younger Samuel was five years of age in 1875. Morgiana later remarried to Mr. William Combs as the 1880 census lists Samuel as living in the William Combs household in Clinch County, with his mother. Samuel is 9 years old and has a sister, Sarah, age 12. Sometime after the 1880 census was taken but before 1893, the family relocated to eastern Lowndes County. During 1893, William Combs name begins showing on the Antioch Church Meeting Minutes and he continued to be active in 1894 and 1895 in the Echols County church. Samuel Crews again, this time in the 1900 Census, living in the William Combs household in Lake Park GA. The census states Samuel was born in November of 1870 in Georgia, he was 29 years old and single and is employed as farm labor. The single status soon changed as on December 22nd 1901 after receiving their marriage license on the 18th of that same month Samuel married Sallie in Echols County, GA. However, Sallie passed away eight years later on May 12, 1909, leaving Samuel to raise the two young children, ages six and one. Samuel now age 39 is listed as the head of household in the 1910 Census. He is in Lake Park (Lowndes) GA with son Leo age 7 and daughter Laura age 1 11/12. The census states he is a “Merchant,” he owns his home, and he is literate. Samuel’s son Leo informed his sons that his father owned and operated a general store located “ at the fork in the road in Lake Park.” During the period of time that the 1910 census was taken, daughter Laura was taken in and raised by Sallie’s brother, Wylie Carter and wife Beulah. Laura appears in both households during the 1910 census of Echols and Lowndes Counties. Samuel passed away a little more than four years after his wife had passed away leaving the children with no parents. The date of his death is listed as November 16, 1913. Daughter Laura was already in good hands with the Wylie Carter family. Son Leo was taken in by Martin T. Carter Jr. and raised to maturity on “Uncle Bucks” farm in Echols. Samuel’s grandson, Harry Lee Crews, stated Samuel remarried and possibly had another child in Hillsborough County, Florida but no records can be located as of this writing. Samuel Crews is interred in the Carter Family Cemetery next to the Sardis Baptist Church in western Echols County next to his wife and mother.
