Our informant is Rev. Mr. Benton, who resides one mile north of Dupont. On his place two hundred yards from his house is a small round pond, thehome of an alligator over 70 years old by actual calculation and the remembrance of some of our oldest inhabitants. Captain John North, who resides immediately north of Mr. Benton, and between whose places this pond is located, is authority that he can remember said "gator" seventy years ago and tells of many of his freaks. There are several of our oldest and most distinguished citizens who substantiate Captain North in regard to the age of said "gator". His "gator"-ship seems to have occupied this pond alone and to have made excursions into the country in quest of food, where he has been seen and quite lately too.
