Cemeteries: Cobb County Old Allatoona Cemetery, Acworth Georgia This cemetery is located off of County Line Road, just north of Mars Hill Road in Acworth. The cemetery is maintained by the Captain John Collins Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and is in remarkably good shape for its age and the many years of neglect that the cemetery went through. Most of the graves are unknown, and are markprnagility flags. Notation on locating: On County Line Road, in the woods between 2450 and 2530, its on the East side of the road. It was suggested to call the State highway department who will give the exact location. With their directions, you won't have any trouble. The last time I was there you went out into the woods about 100 yards. There may even be a fence now but I bet the graves are still there. Julius lacowboy26@aol.com A. S. Brooks, Rhoda Brooks, Sarah Carruth, Milley Griggs, Caroline (wife of W.P. Griggs) Griggs, W.B. *correction Griggs, W.P. second son of Hugh and Mary Porter Griggs. We think that Hugh and Mary Porter Griggs are buried opposite the head stones of Caroline and W.P. because we have a letter written by Hugh Porter that his wife Mary was buried in Alatuna(several spellings)Baptist Cemetery on Dec. 25, 1869- -and there are two slightly sunken grves, unmarked, except for yellow flags, there. How odd that William Ponder buried both his wife and Mother on Dec. 25--one in 1869 and the other in 1897. Hugh and Mary had several children--at least eleven. In Hugh's note, he says that Mary came to Norfolk, Va. in Nov.180l--she was 6 years old--and that they married in Mecklenburg, N.C.( Charlotte) on Nov 1811. I have a copy of their marriage license. Her brother came with her on the ship from Ireland (Dublin) and his name is also Hugh. She had smallpox while on the ship and her hands were restrained, therefore she had no scarring. Her father's name was Archibald and therefore she named her firstborn son Archibald Porter vaug6559@bellsouth.net Gretchen Vaughan Gunnell, W. G.
