Greers Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery Records 1943-2000

Greers Chapel Baptist Church published a small booklet
giving a history of the cemetery and the burials as well as
a map with all the graves. Part of this booklet is being
reprinted here with permission of Edward Ingram, Assistant

GREERS CHAPEL BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY HISTORY

September 3, 1999

The Cemetery was created in 1943 by Mr. Mont & Jessie
Rickman. They owned a farm on Roberts Road at the
intersection of Roberts Road and Greers Chapel Road. The
Rickman's lost a son on April 4, 1943, Mont Dean Rickman. He
was the first person to be buried in the cemetery. On July
10, 1943, the Rickman's deeded Greers Chapel Baptist Church
the one acre where Mont Dean Rickman was buried. The church
gave Mr. Rickman a love offering of approximately $50.00 for
donating the land.

Mr. Joe Whit Chastain owned a small strip of land joining
the Rickman farm; he planned to be buried there. After Mr.
Rickman gave the land to start the cemetery, Mr. Joe Whit
Chastain gave his strip of land to the cemetery in exchange
for a burial plot.

The remaining land was donated to the church on April 26,
1968. All the land around the cemetery was surrounded by
about 1100 acres that was purchased by Terminal Facilities
for development. Harry Ingram, of Greers Chapel Church,
contacted the owners and requested they give consideration
to donating the church some property which adjoined the
cemetery. After months of deliberation, they donated the
southeast tract and a southwest tract.

In summary, the present Greers Chapel Cemetery is made up of
land donations by Mont & Jessie Rickman, Joe Whit Chastain,
and Terminal Facilities.

Dan Myers is Chairman of the Cemetery Maintenance Committee,
along with assistants Bobby Chance, Doyle Knight, and Ed
Ingram. We are keeping up the cemetery at the present time
at no cost. Since we are getting older, in the future we
will need to hire this done.
