I confide in his loyalty and recommend his pardon Executor’s office Milledgeville, GA July 10, 1866 From all the information before me I believe the within named applicant will be a peaceable, loyal citizen and recognized that his application for amnesty be granted. McCleskey For Special Pardon Cobb Co, GA 1 st Exception Deputy Marshall Head Quarters of Georgia Augusta GA, February 14, 1866 Respectfully forwarded to the Attorney General U.S. at Washington City July 5/66 Rebel Deputy Marshall Georgia Cobb County To His Excellency Andrew Johnson President of the United States of America. The Petition of James F. McCleskey a citizen of and resident in said county most respectfully shews unto your Excellency 1st That he is thirty two years of age—six feet high—hair black—eyes black—and complexion dark. That he is a native of Hall County, Georgia and by occupation a farmer. 2nd That he would be enabled to avail himself of the benefit of your excellency Amnesty Proclamation and take the Oath therein prescribed but for the fact that he said as “Deputy Marshal of the Confederate States for the Northern District of Georgia” from December 1861 to April 1862, under an appointment of Thomas L. Ross the Marshall of said District. In April 1862 he resigned said office and has had nothing to do with it since. 3rd. He distinctly states that he does not fall within any other exception made in your Excellency’s said Proclamation And that the government of the United States has not taken possession of any part of his property, nor have proceedings, whatever been instituted against him in any of the county Civil or Military of the United States for treason or for conspiracy against the Government of the United States or for any other cause whatever. 4th He has this day taken the oath of Amnesty prescribed by your Excellency and annexes the same hereto as a part of this petition. And he will faithfully and conscientiously to the utmost of his ability fulfills and discharge all his duties as a true and loyal citizen of the United States. The premises considered your petition most respectfully but earnestly prays your Excellency to grant him a special pardon and restore him to all the rights of a good and loyal citizen and as in duty bound, he will ever pray.
