I had been at rifle practice ever since 1862, and I kept right on practicing until 1865, when my command surrendered in North Carolina. Since that time I have been fighting for a living for my wife and children, and to educate the children. Thank the good Lord, I am still among the living, but there are so few of the old Confederates left. I will give the names of all I know living from my company and I will say here they were all volunteers. J.D. Perkinson, T.J. Perkinson, C. McKinney, T.R. Echols, William Stroud, and A.A. Griggs. There may be a few more, I can not say though. One hundred and sixty men went with the company in 1862 to the war and only six of these were at the surrender, the others being disposed of one way or another. A.A. Griggs, Co.F, 1st Confederate Regiment Ga., Volunteers, Jackson’s Brigade. (The practice of the big guns in old Cobb, with their echoes booming around the mountains, awaken memories of active and strenuous service, and the martial spirit is still alive in this old soldier. Even yet he would charge the German trenches with all the fire of youth. - Ed.) [Transcribed 10/19/05 Lynn Cunningham] Additional Comments: Griggs, Archibald A. - Private May 1, 1862. Roll for August 31, 1864, last on file, shows him present. Pension records show he was captured in Paulding County, Georgia, September 1864. Escaped and joined Co. D, 1st Regiment Georgia Cavalry September 1864. (Not found on later command rolls covering period to December 1864.) (Born in Georgia March 1, 1841.)
