Mr Bennett was in his store and his two children were out playing around the back of the store, where there is a well. It being covered over with plank about level with the ground. There is a trap door in the covering and it is supposed the children raised it and in so doing the smallest one fell in. No one saw him fall in except his little brother, but he had presence of mind to run and tell his father. The well is about 85 feet deep and at the time had ten feet of water in it. It also had a pipe running from the wind mill above down into the well. Mr Bennett upon reaching the well did not wait for ropes or ladder but jumped in and caught the pipe with his hands and went plunging down into the darkness at a fearful rate of speed, striking the water with feet foremost, going clear under. In coming up his hand touched the dress of his child, clinging to it he rose to the top of the water and by holding to the pipe managed to raise the child out of the water until ropes could be procured and let down to him, which took several minutes, as no one knew of it at first. Strange to say, with the exception of a few slight bruises the child was not hurt. Mrs Gertrude Cox, wife of Rev J F Cox, who has been sick for several months, died at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs John Bate, last Monday morning at four o'clock. Mrs Cox was born and raised in Acworth and none knew her but to love her. Besides her father and mother she leaves several sisters and two brothers, Mr W T Bate of Acworth and Mr John Bate of Marietta. Rev Mr Dyer, former pastor of Baptist church, preached two fine sermons at the Baptist church here last Sunday. Several bales of cotton were seen on the streets last Saturday, which made us feel like it was fall instead of spring. Prof J M York is in town this week visiting his many friends. The prodigal son, Gus Alley, a lad of about 14 years, who ran away a few weeks ago to seek his fortune in Alabama, has returned home.
