The reading contest ended in favor of Smyrna. In the spelling contest between the two schools 14 were on each side. When the contest ended 11 of the Olive Springs school remained standing, only three went down. P M RICE was the last to go down of the Smyrna school. The patrons here are greatly pleased at the victory won. These spelling contests have caused hard study by the students of both schools. DIED - Friday night Feb. 23d, Mr J J YORK, one of our oldest citizens, who for many years was a member of the Baptist church. The funeral was conducted under the auspices of the Confederate veterans. Rev A J McCOY conducted the funeral. Gen PHILLIPS led the opening prayer. Col C D PHILLIPS made an eloquent talk. Mr J Gid MORRIS in behalf of the Daughters of the Confederacy, placed a beautiful wreath of flowers on the casket. Mr Jack MORRIS also expressed regret and sorrow at the loss of such a worthy citizen. Interment in Maloney Springs cemetery. Many beautiful wreaths of flowers bedecked his grave. The literary society was well attended Saturday night. Rev McCOLLUM preached an interesting sermon here Sunday. Mr N A BREWER has recovered from his injuries, result of a fall from a scaffold while working on a house at Butlers. John Wilkes BOOTH was thrown from a wagon by a runaway horse and badly hurt. He is confined to his room and receiving good attention. The young men's debating club will meet Wednesday night and discuss, Resolved, that electricity is more useful than steam. Affirmative, Oscar WADE; negative, Zack DANIELL.
