He arose about 5 o'clock, made a fire as usual and his wife thought he was feeding his stock until he did not appear at the proper time. His daughter-in-law and sister-in-law were visiting them and he had prepared to kill hogs that morning. When he failed to appear they decided he had gone after someone to help him kill his hogs. About seven o'clock his grandson, Carl RICE, came to carry his mother home, and happened to look in the cotton house and saw his grandfather hanging there. He had probably been dead about two hours when he was found. His mind had been unbalanced for two or three weeks, but no one had detected it except his wife and she, thinking he would probably soon be all right, had not told her children. Coroner LYON was sent for and a jury soon summoned, which rendered a verdict of suicide by hanging himself. Mr RICE was 67 years of age, a prominent man in the community and church. He had served as a steward in the church at this place for a number of years and was a good man. His untimely death is deeply lamented by a large circle of friends besides a wife and six children, all grown and married, and many other relatives who will miss the many acts of kindness he had shown them. The funeral serviced were conducted by Rev S B LEDBETTER of Marietta, and the body laid to rest in the cemetery at this place Saturday afternoon. The bereaved ones have our sympathy in this dark hour. Our new pastor, Rev Mr EADS, will move to Powder Springs this week and will fill his appointment here next Sunday. Mr G B LINDSAY and family of Douglasville and Mrs Lou PRITCHETT and children of Covington attended the funeral of Mr F M RICE. Prof GREER will have an entertainment by his school Tuesday night, December 23d. Everybody invited. We learn that the North Georgia Conference, recently held in Atlanta, made our church a half station, we will now have preaching two Sundays in each month. Rev H M C EADS is our new preacher. Mrs C E CHAMBERLAIN and children of Hapeville, Ga., are visiting relatives in this community. We regret very much to hear Mrs Sylvania KEMP is suffering a great deal with rheumatism. Mr W P CLAY has gone to Montgomery, Ala., on business. Miss Lula GUFFIN left last Friday to spend several weeks with relatives and friends in Norcross and Atlanta. Miss Addie McELREATH of Lost Mountain is attending school here. She is boarding with the Misses WILLOUGHBY. Mr J N McEACHERN is having the church and school building painted, also all the houses on his place here. Born to Mr and Mrs J W MAYES Monday, a fine son. Mr W P CLAY has returned form Montgomery, Ala., where he went on business. Mrs Georgia CLAY and son, Howard, of Atlanta, attended the burial of F M RICE here Saturday. Mike and Elam CARROLL, who lived near Moon, died recently of Typhoid fever. We regret very much to learn the Mrs B V HOPKINS is very sick. We hope for her speedy recovery. J N McEACHERN and wife of Atlanta were here Saturday. We expect to report a wedding in the near future. - RUBY File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/cobb/newspapers/upshawco396nnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/gafiles/ File size: 3.8 Kb
