The Marietta Journal, December 7, 1893
Mr George R GILBERT died at his residence in this city on last Monday morning
about twenty-five minutes after 10 o'clock in the 80th year of his age.  Mr
GILBERT was an old resident of Marietta and for many years a merchant of the
place.  He was an highly esteemed and valued citizen, a man of unimpeachable
integrity, honesty and uprightness.  He had that kindness of heart and courtesy
of disposition that won him friends and retained them.  If he had an enemy he
was unknown.  He was a consistent and consecrated member of the Methodist
Church, and when health would permit, he was always seen in attendance upon the
services of the church.  He had been married three times, the wife of his last
marriage surviving him.  He leaves two sons, Mr Alban B GILBERT and Mr W E
GILBERT, both honored citizens and successful merchants of Marietta.  The
familiar face and kindly greeting of Mr George R GILBERT will be missed, but he
has passed happily to the celestial shore where he is forever in the sweet
companionship of God's saints.  His funeral service took place at the Methodist
church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, after which his remains were placed at
rest in the city cemetery.  Our sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved
wife, sons and other relatives.
