HAMBY PASSES AWAY His Death is Deeply Regretted by our Marietta People. It is with sadness and sorrow we chronicle the death of Mr. P. T. Hamby, a prominent citizen and merchant of this place. The sad event occurred Wednesday afternoon 2:15 o'clock, November 18th, at the family residence on Washington Avenue. He was taken sick two weeks ago last Monday with what is known as the "Melton fever", a hereditary family disease that assumed an erysipelas form culminating in a high fever. He gradually grew worse until there was a dissolution of body and soul, and his spirit went back to the God who gave it. The deceased was 54 years of age and was a native of this county. He was a prominent merchant of this place and was of the firm of P. T. Hamby & Co. He had served the city as Alderman. He married Miss Theresa Gober a number of years ago, a sister of Judge Geo. F. Gober and from this happy union six sons and one daughter came to bless their home, all now living. They are Thomas, Homer, Hugh, George, Edgar and Herbert Hamby and Mrs. A. A. Bishop. His wife survives him. Mr. Hamby was not connected with any Church but was raised in the Primitive Baptist faith and was a strong believer in the Christian religion and gave the Creator all glory and power. He was familiar with the scriptures and would quote from the Bible with a good deal of memory. He was a man of honor and integrity, always courteous and considerate, kindly disposed and gentle in his death. Marietta has lost a noble citizen, and his wife a devoted husband and his children an affectionate father. The funeral took place at the family residence on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. V. F. Manget officiating. The interment was in the city cemetery. The pall bearers were Mrsses J. M. Stone, W. J. Frey, John Awtrey, E. F. Dobbs, J. A. Massey, W. F. Williams and G. M. Hicks. The Marietta Fire Company No. 1 of which the deceased was a member turned out in a body and paid their respect to his memory. We deeply sympathise with the bereaved family. The stores closed during the funeral hour in respect to the memory of this good man. Owing to a rock being stuck in digging the grave, the burial was postponed to Friday morning. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
