An Immense Concourse Present. The announcement on the streets Saturday morning about 8 o'clock of the death of the wife of Mr W R MONTGOMERY, at the family residence here, was a shock to our entire people. She was at the supper table the evening before and chatted pleasantly and brightly with the family, but next morning by 8 o'clock she was a corpse. How sad! How shocking! She, who was the light and queen of a happy home, was taken away forever. She was truly a good and lovable woman, a devoted wife and an affectionate mother. She was in the 47th year of her age. She was the daughter of the late Mr Jesse J NORTHCUTT, who has long since "passed over." As Miss Emma J NORTHCUTT, she was a reigning queen and quite popular. She was united in marriage to Mr William R MONTGOMERY on May 17th, 1866. Her death occurred Saturday morning, July 21st, 1894. She leaves a husband and five children, three girls and two boys, a mother, three sisters and three brothers, and other relatives, to mourn her untimely demise. The funeral took place at the Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, of which church she was a consistent member. As an evidence of the high esteem and love in which the deceased was held the church was crowded beyond its seating capacity and many had to stand up! The altar and casket were banked with lovely flowers, contributions of loving hands and hearts. A white pigeon spread its snowy wings over a floral tribute, emblematic of the pure life of her who had departed. The escort was composed of Judge W M SESSIONS, Judge Geo F GOBER, Hon A S CLAY, Judge J M STONE, Mr B R LEGG, Mr J B GLOVER, Mr W E GILBERT and Mr A M DOBBS. The pall bearers were Messrs James T ANDERSON, John T BRANTLEY, H B DICK, W L BUTTOLPH, M M SESSIONS, and Joseph E BOSTON. The reading lesson was made by Rev J H PATTON. Prayer by Rev J A WYNNE. "Asleep in Jesus" was sung by the choir. Rev J H PATTON's funeral discourse was based on the text: "I am in a straight betwixt two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better." The remarks were very touching, tender and consoling. A solo, "He giveth His beloved sleep," was sweetly sung by Mrs J C HARRIS of Rome. Prayer was then offered by Rev P M RYBURN. The song, "I would not live always," was sung by the choir. After which the remains, followed by a long procession of carriages, were carried to the city cemetery and consigned to their last resting place. All hearts go out in deep sympathy to the bereaved family in this great sorrow that has fallen upon their hearts and the shadow that has darkened and driven away the sunshine from their home.
