H. Barnes Rites Sunday in Marietta Well-Known Native was A Founder of Old Knitting Mills Rites were conducted Sunday afternoon, for John Harris Barnes, 80, Marietta businessman for 40 years until his retirement in 1919, who died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon of a heart attack. His funeral was conducted from the Mayes Ward Funeral Home with Rev. M. O. Sommers and Dr. J. H. Patton officiating. Burial followed in City cemetery with the following grandsons serving as pallbearers: James, Charles, Jesse and Robert Squires and Jack and Harry Livingston. A native of Marietta Mr. Barnes was married in November 1882 to Miss Anne Northcutt. He was prominently identified in Marietta business as dry goods and shoe store operator until he joined a group of Mariettans in establishing the Old Marieta Knitting Mills, remaining with that firm as executive until his retirement 21 years ago. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, Mrs. R. L. Squires, Mrs. H. W. Livingston of Marietta; Mrs. Charles Groover, of Black Mountain, N. C. and Mrs. B. D. Fincannon, of Jacksonville; two sons, B. N. of Los Angeles and John H. Jr. of Black Mountain; five sisters, Mrs. R. A. Hill, Mrs Henry Allgood and Miss Ida Barnes, Marietta; Mrs. Marion Carter and Miss Effie Barnes, of Powder Springs and 17 grandchildren.
