C. & St. Louis Railway Bulletin ATLANTA DIVISION VETERAN DIES Robert L. (Doc) Squires, 78, veteran engineer of this company and formerly of the W&A RR, died June 3rd, at his home at Marietta, GA. He had been retired since 1950. Mr. Squires who gave up medicine for a career in railroading was a native of Dalton, GA., removing to Atlanta at an early age with his parents. He was a gradutate of Atlanta Boys school, attended the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn. for a period and later graduated from the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeions, now known as Emory University. After three months' practice he quit his medical career to go to work for the former W&A RR as a fireman under his father. He became an engineer in 1913, serving 37 years on the right side of steam locomotives and later diesels. He was a member of the BofLE and for many years a faithful member of the Marietta Methodist Church. When asked once, why he gave up medicine for a railroad career, Mr. Squires replied that "railroading and not medicine was in his blood." There had been a Squires on the W&A since 1858, indeed that tradition is being carried on today in the person of Mr. Squires son, Jesse. Altogether Squires have served the railroad 99 years. The colorful career of "Doc" Squires was one replete with excitement and all the interest that goes with almost a half a century of riding the front end of a train. So passes still another of the road's fine older group of engineers, "right side" men who came up under steam-and cinders, yes, and gas. Only the old timers knew and had experienced "tunnel gas" of the days of steam. Doc Squires was a good engineer, one of the best. He had the throttle touch, the keen eye, the ready reflex, the instant judgement, that ever marks a real engineer.
