January 29, 1928 DEWEY McLEAN IS KILLED BY GASKIN A tragedy involving two of Coffee's well known families occurred last Wednesday night at the home of Jonathan Hill, north of Broxton, when Spurgeon Gaskin shot and killed Dewey McLean, while sitting at the supper table. The best facts obtainable are that several days ago Dewey McLean and some other young man had some trouble. Spurgeon Gaskin while intoxicated walked into the dining room at Jonathan Hill's and asked McLean, who was eating, if he was the man who had imposed on his "buddie", meaning a friend, using oaths in asking the question, and immediately pulled out his pistol and shot McLean, killing him instantly. He shot twice. Gaskin was placed under arrest and brought to jail in Douglas. He is a brother of the late Dan Gaskin, who was clerk of superior court here for a number of years, and had just returned from the west where had been living for about 22 years. He is about 40 years of age. Dewey McLean was a son of Archie F. McLean, and a grandson of the late Duncan McLean. SOURCE: Satilla Regional Library, Genealogy Dept., Douglas, Coffee Co., GA.
