Mr. Smith was a rural mail carrier for over thirty years and a Boy Scout Leader for many years. He was also a World War II veteran, the last Pearl Harbor survivor in Coffee County, and a Deacon of the Broxton Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at Broxton Baptist Church on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Den Weniger, Rev. Derrick Herlocker and Rev. Freddy Gardner officiating. Music was provided by Eastern Gate Quartet who sang "Where Can I Go but to the Lord" and the congregation, led by Sam Roberts, sang "Heaven Came Down" and "Blest Be the Tie That Binds" with Willifred Thompson, organist and Barbara Rish, piano accompanying. Interment followed in the Broxton City Cemetery. Survivors include: wife: Lurlyne Lott Smith, sons: James Olvin (Linda) Smith, Jr., Milledgeville, GA, Parker Lee "Sparky" (Janet) Smith, Broxton, GA; daughter: Paula Khristian Smith, Atlanta, GA; brother: Samuel Smith, Macon, GA; granddaughters: Tyler Smith, Washington, DC, Taylor Rebecca Smith, Athens, GA; grandson: James Olvin Smith III, Gainesville, FL. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, Lawson Rudolph Smith. Sims Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
