Sharpshooters of the American Civil War 1861-65 by Philip Katcher, Osprey Publishing Co. 2002, p. 5. ...Civil War sharpshooter units were largely used as skirmishers, an elite shock force of the kind that in the late days of World War One the Germans would call storm troopers. It was largely their job to attack strong enemy positions and defend weak friendly ones. They fought, not in two lines shoulder to shoulder as line infantry, but consistently as light infantry in open order, taking cover whereever possible. Confederate sharpshooter John D. Young later described the Civil War sharpshooter unit's function as acting "as Kinglake aptly puts it, as 'the spike-head of the division,' being used either to push in, or else to ward off attack." 1867 Poor School roll http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/upson/history/1867.txt Surname Given Name # Child District BROWN Henry 3 555th BROWN W.S. 2 555th BROWN W.H. 6 557th BROWN J.B. 2 557th BROWN J.C. 3 589th 1869 Poor School roll Surname Given Name # Child District BROWN A.W. 2 561st BROWN H.T. 4 555th BROWN William 3 470th BROWN Elizabeth 2 470th BROWN J.W. 6 589th BROWN John C. 6 537th BROWN James B. 2 537th BROWN Ray 1 537th BROWN Franklin 9 537th BROWN Thomas J. 2 537th BROWN William H. 6 537th BROWN William J. 1 537th 1870 Upson Co., P.
