H. Alderman dies at age 77 Respected lawman dies at his home in Norman Park Staff reports Moultrie - Former Colquitt County Sheriff D. H. Alderman died Thursday at his Norman Park home following a lengthy bout with cancer. He was 77. Alderman was involved in local law enforcement for 35 years. Of that time, he was sheriff of Colquitt County for 20 years. Alderman retired in 1980 after completing his fourth term in office. He was succeeded at that post by his longtime chief deputy, the late Gene Beard. Alderman was widely known in Georgia law enforcement. Following his discharge from the U.S. Navy, Alderman joined the City of Moultrie Police Department in 1946 and rose to the post of assistant chief. He resigned from the department to successfully run for sheriff. He began his first term at that post in 1960. A graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy, Alderman took several special training courses at the University of Georgia and other locations. He played a key role in developing the Sheriffs' Boys Ranch in Hahira. In 1977, Alderman was named the Georgia Moose Association Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and in 1979 was picked by the Georgia Sheriff's Association as its "Sheriff of the Year." He helped organize the Moultrie School Boy Patrol and the Colquitt County Drug Task Force. Upon his retirement, Alderman said serving two decades as sheriff "fulfilled a life's dream for me." Page 2: [obituaries] D. H. Alderman Jr. Norman Park - D. H. Alderman, Jr., of Norman Park, died Thursday, Sept 14, at his residence. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Harrell-Faircloth Funeral Home. Rev. Jim Houseal will officiate, assisted by Rev. Jimmy Voyles and Rev. J.E. Moak. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be the Colquitt County Sheriff's Department. Honorary pallbearers will be the Georgia Peace Officers Association. Born March 20, 1923, in Colquitt County, Mr. Alderman was the son of the late D. H. Alderman Sr. and the late Georgia Livingston Alderman. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1945, and was a veteran of World War II. He served 15 years with the Moultrie Police Department, and 20 years as sheriff of Colquitt County. Mr. Alderman organized the Moultrie School Boy Patrol and the Colquitt County Drug Task Force, and helped to set up the first Georgia Sheriffs' Boys Ranch. He was a member of the Moultrie Shrine Club, a past member of the Moultrie Lions Club and a member of Norman Park United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Harrell-Faircloth Funeral Home. The family may be contacted at their residence in Norman Park.
