He was born 11 FEB 1919 in Colquitt County, the son of James M. PATE, born in Muscogee County, Georgia; mother’s name not given (she was born in Chattahoochee County, Georgia). [This is James Matthew & Alice Pearl (PATE) PATE.] The deceased received medical attention from 28 MAY 1920 to 01 JUN 1920, and was last seen alive on 01 JUN 1920; he died at 3 a.m. from intestinal toxemia. PATE of Funston [Colquitt County], Georgia. Georgia death certificate, file #781-24: James Matthew PATE, a white male aged about 37 years, died 23 JAN 1924 at home in Hartsfield, Colquitt County, Georgia, in the 1510th Georgia Militia District. A farmer, he was born in Muscogee County, Georgia (birth date not known), the son of *Thomas Henry PATE (birth place not known) and Mrs. Georgian SIZEMORE, born in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. He was married to Mrs. Alice PATE [Alice Pearl PATE, daughter of Marion Jordan “Med” & Sarah A. (RYALS) PATE]. The deceased was medically attended from 22 JAN 1924 to 23 JAN 1924 and last seen alive by the attending physician on 24 JAN 1924. Death occurred at 3 a.m. as the result of pneumonia, which lasted for fourteen hours. A contributory factor cited was the deceased’s leg having been crushed by a stump puller on 22 JAN 1922 [evidently meant to convey “about two years prior”]. In answer to the question of where the disease had been contracted, the answer appears to say “Sarah” [this is perhaps in reference to the deceased’s sister-in-law, Sallie (PATE) PATE]. No operation had been performed prior to the death, and no autopsy was conducted. Diagnosis was determined physically [= by physical examination]. The attending physician was signed as J. A. SUMMERLIN of Hartsfield, Georgia, on 23 JAN 1924, who also signed as registrar on the same date. Removal was by M. W. MAJORS of Moultrie [Colquitt County], Georgia, for burial on 24 JAN 1924 at Oak Grove Cemetery. The informant was J. A. PATE [probably, Jordan Andrew PATE, husband of Sarah Caroline “Sallie” PATE, sister of Alice PATE, wife of the deceased. Jordan Andrew is son of James M. & Lucinda (UNKNOWN) PATE]. [*Some descendants identify this man, Tom PATE, to be James Thomas PATE, a son of Jordan & Mary (BLACKMON) PATE. I believe him to be Benjamin Thomas PATE, son of Thomas & Mary Ann (HIGDON) PATE. I cannot explain where the given name Henry came from; note that the man died in 1891 and may not have been well known to the informant, J. A. PATE. jml] Georgia death certificate, file #22131-25: Minnie C. PATE, a white female aged 51 years, 9 months and 20 days, died 05 AUG 1925 in Hartsfield, Colquitt County, Georgia, in the 1510th Georgia Militia District, where she resided. A housewife, she was married to John PATE [John William PATE, son of Med & Sarah Ann (RYALS) PATE] and was born about 15 OCT 1873 in Georgia, the daughter of Wash SIZEMORE, born in Georgia (mother’s name and birth place not known). [Minnie is believed to be the daughter of George Washington SIZEMORE, born 1832, by his second wife Martha J. UNKNOWN.] The deceased was medically attended from 01 JAN 1925 to 05 AUG 1925 and was last seen alive on 05 AUG 1925; she died at 3 p.m. as the result of chronic nephritis, which had persisted for two years; a contributory factor was high blood pressure. The nephritis had been contracted locally; no operation preceded the death, and no autopsy was performed. The diagnosis was confirmed chemically. The attending physcian was J. A. SUMMERLIN of Hartsfield, Georgia, who also signed as registrar on 07 AUG 1925. Removal was by family and friends to Hartsfield Cemetery for burial on 06 AUG 1925. The informant was Homer PATE of Hartsfield, Georgia. [The exact identity of this Homer PATE is not clear. Minnie & John PATE are only known to have had one child, Richard, b. 1900, but there may have been others. John had a first cousin named Homer PATE, son of John Washington & Celia Ann (RYALS) PATE; if Celia Ann and Sarah Ann (RYALS) PATE were sisters, then John & Homer were double first cousins. Georgia Ann “Sis” (SIZEMORE) PATE had a son named Homer. Sis was first cousin (through her mother) to John and (through her father) to Minnie. This Homer was brother to James M. PATE, who m. Alice PATE, sister of John. jml] Georgia death certificate, file # 32202-28: Miss Mattie PATE, a white single female aged 59 years, d. 23 DEC 1928 in Hartsfield, Colquitt County, Georgia (Hartsfield is also listed as the military district), where she resided. PATE [apparently her brother John William PATE] of Doerun [Colquitt County], Georgia. [I had a birth date of 15 MAR 1871 by family members which is correct? Also, Med PATE’s wife has appeared in various records as Sarah A., Sarah Ann, and Sarah C.; ROGER’s “History of Chattahoochee County, Georgia calls her Celia Ann RYALS, though Celia Ann is evidently the name of one of her sisters. Sara A. E. is a new one. jml] Georgia death certificate, file # 25483-33: Miss Susie PATE, a single white female aged 57 years, died 22 OCT 1933 in Autreyville, Colquitt County, Georgia, where she resided.
