In the compilation of the Directory, the utmost accuracy has been aimed at, although many errors unavoidably incident to a work of this kind will undoubtedly be found. AUGUSTA As it was sixty-seven years ago; the most authentic information is from McCall's history of Georgia: Augusta was incorporated in 1791. Previous to that time the government of the city was vested in commissioners, or trustees, who exercised over the town, church, academy and public lands such authority as the Legislature, by which they were appointed, chose to give them. This was the case until 1776, when the church was given into the hands of certain persons incorporated for that purpose. The remaining powers of the commissioners or trustees were further curtailed in 1798, by the act which incorporated the city; which left them the terry unsold lots and town common, which they have since held as trustees of the Richmond Academy. The members of the first council were George Walker, James Pearre, Robert Creswell, Andrew Innis, Isaac Herbert, and William Longstreet. Immediately after their election, they met "at the house of Mr. Durkee," and chose Thomas Cumming, unanimously, as Intendant. Joseph Hutchinson was chosen clerk. The first bridge across the Savannah, at this place, was erected by Wade Hampton, in 1791, according to a contract between him and the trustees of the academy, he agreeing to pay 50£ per year for the privilege, and allowing all connected with that institution to pass over free of toll. The first newspaper published in Augusta was called the "Augusta Chronicle and Gazette of the State," and was commenced in 1786. It was about one-fourth the present size of the Chronicle and Sentinel, and its "latest news from New York" was usually from three to four weeks old. This paper was continued under that title until 1880, at which time it was united with the States Rights' Sentinel, and is now the Chronicle & Sentinel. The drama made its "first appearance" in Augusta, "positively for six nights only," in 1798, under the auspices of Messrs. Williamson & Jones, who "astonished the natives" on their first night with the commedy of "Three Weeks after Marriage." Some curious presentments by grand juries have been selected from the books in the office of the Clerk of the Superior Court. In 1782, the Grand Jury "present as a grievance the want of a house of worship in the town of Augusta, and other places in the country." The same jury "present as a grievance that they have not been furnished with the Acts of the General Assembly." and recommended that "some copies be sent to the printing office, that they at least have the privilege of buying them for themselves." They also "present as a grievance the number of strangers coming from different parts of the country without passes, or giving any account of themselves." ___ is presented by the same jury "for hanging E____ L_____ without any authority." Here is one which appears to have had reference to some sectarian controversy. In 1794, the grand jury "present the indiscreet observance of public worship" as having "held the peaceably minded in terror of divine vengeance." In 1790, "the number of negroes, calling themselves parsons, going about the country" is presented as a nuisance. The same jury recommended the imposition of a fine "upon all persons erecting wooden chimnies in the town of Augusta. If the growth of Augusta has been less rapid than that of many other towns, it has been of more healthy and permanent character—the result of steadily increasing wealth, population and business. Its numerous churches, schools, and other public institutions (in which respect it can challenge a comparison with any city in the Southern States) afford the best evidence of the moral and enlightened character of its population, in which we have the surest guarantee of its future prosperity. The population of Augusta in 1841 was 6,257, at present it is estimated at 18,000 inhabitants, showing an increase of population from 1841 to 1859, of 11,743. The length of the city, ("including East and West Boundary Streets,") is 2 and 19-100 miles. The width, ("including East Bay and South Boundary Streets,") is 1 and 12-100 miles. The streets all run parallel to each other, North and South and East and West. Each street running North and South is numbered in its proper order, commencing on Bay-street with No. 1. Each street running East and West, is numbered in like manner, commencing on Reynold-street on North side at East Boundary, the numbers alternating on each side of each street. The vote of the city in 1841, was 724 votes; in 1858 the list of Registered votes amounted to 1,241 votes, showing an increase of 517 votes since 1841. Augusta is now in the highest state of prosperity and advancement. Her merchants for promptness, dispatch and business qualifications are not to be surpassed in any community. She can boast of her Cotton Factories, her Flouring Mills, Foundaries, Car Factories, Machine Shops and Work Shops of all kinds, and according to population will compare favorably with any city in the Union, and she is far ahead of any city in the South. Her facilities of communication by Railroad. River and Canal arc unequalled in the South. Her march is steadily onward and upward. AUGUSTA CITY DIRECTORY.
