Company HISTORY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Co K was Mustered into Confederate service in Thomson Georgia , Early 1862 during the time that the capital of Richmond was threatened by Union armies Peninsula campaign . After hurried weeks of organizing , Training and equipment issue the Company ,along with other units of the Georgia 48th Infantry , arrived at its first posting, assigned to Guard areas near Charleston South Carolina. Several weeks later Orders arrived sending the Thomson Men North to Richmond to become part of the Army of Northern Virginia. Arriving in time to act as a reserve during the Battle of Seven Pines the Men of Co K then received their baptism under fire during the Seven Days Campaign , which saved Richmond from the advancing Federals. Serving with Valor through the bitter fighting at Second Bull Run, Antitem, Fredricksburg and Chancellorsville Co K was hardened into a tough respected unit of Veterans under the Brigade Commands of first General Roswell Ripely and then General Ransom Wright, The Thomson men were attached to General AP Hills Division under overall command of General James Longstreet. Taking heavy casualties during the valiant Three days at Gettysburg the Company was then present and active through the hard and slow decline of Confederate fortunes leading to the siege at Petersburg and surrender at Appomattox in April 1865 Other Notes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After Surrender Most of the Men of Co K returned to the Farms and Business they had left in Thomson. Many would be active in Local politics as well as Civic projects . An Active Unit of the National Confederate Veteran Organization existed in Thomson for a Number of years.
