Personally appeared before the Honorable, the Superior Court now sitting, John Lambert, a resident of the State and County aforesaid, aged 79 years, who being duly sworn according to the law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefits of a provision made by an Act of Congress, passed June 7, 1832. That he enlisted in the Army of the United States in the year 1776, and served in the First Regiment of the Virginia Line, commanded by Col. George Gibson, in the Company of Thomas Ewell. That he was then a resident of the County of Prince William, in the State of Virginia, and enlisted for the term of three years. That he does not recollect the exact date at which he entered the service, but joined the Army under General Washington a few days after the Battle of Brandywine, and remained through the winter at Valley Forge and until the British evacuated Philadelphia. That he then accompanied the Army under the Commander in Chief in pursuit of the enemy thru the Jersies, and was engaged in the Battle of Monmouth in a detachment commanded by General Scott. That he accompanied the main Army tp White Plains, and was present when Major Andre was hung. That at Middlebrooks encampment, having nearly served out his time or tour of three years, he enlisted for the duration of the war in the Continental Line; as well as now recollected, into Capt. Crump's Company, and the Regiment commanded by Col. Charles Dabney. That he returned with the Army to Philadelphia, where he received a furlough of four months, and returned home. This interval of four months was the only time during which he was out of service from the time of his first enlistment until the close of the war. That at the expiration of his furlough, he again joined the regiment at Goochland Courthouse, State of Virginia. That he was present at the Siege of York, and the capture of Cornwallis, and was the second man who entered the gates on that occasion. That he went from York to Portsmouth, where he spent the winter, and returned to York in the Spring, where he remained until finally discharged in the Spring of 1783, by Col. Charles Dabney. That he was in possession for a number of years of his discharge but under the impression that it never would be of any service to him, had permitted it to be lost or mislaid, and cannot now find it. He doth further declare that on rejoining his regiment at Goochland Courthouse he recived the appointment of Non-commissioned Officer, viz: Sergeant, in which capacity he continued to act, until the end of the War. The above statement is true, as to all material facts, and if any unimportant errors should exist, he claims a charitable indulgence as he has been compelled to rely exclusively on his memory, being able neither to read or write. Claims that his name is not on the pension rools of any Agency or State. s/JOHN x LAMBERT Georgia Rolls-- John Lambert, Columbia Co., Sergeant, Virginia Cont'l. line $120.00 Annual allowance/$300.00 Amount Received Mar. 18, 1833 Pensioned started.
